Orlando Magic

A competition was held in a local newspaper for members of the public to select a name for the team. Over four thousand entries were submitted and the committee decided to go with the Magic, stating the name referred to the magic of Orlando.

Portland Thorns

The Portland Thorns American women’s football team based in Oregon. The team was founded in 2012 and plays in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Washington Wizards

Originally known as the Washington Bullets, in 1995 owner Abe Pollin announced he was changing the Basketball teams name to the Washington Wizards. The reason given for the change was the name bullets had acquired a negative reputation, with higher levels of gun crime in the city during the 1990’s. 

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg was founded on 1 July 1938 with the catchy name Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben (In English: City of the KdF Car at Fallersleben). Following the urging of the British following World War II, the city was renamed as Wolfsburg on 25 May 1945. The name Wolfsburg comes from a 13th century castle located in the city.

Black Cats (Sunderland)

In 1997 when Sunderland moved to their brand new stadium, the club decided to let the fans pick a new team nickname. With over 11,000 votes on the club's official website, almost half of them preferred the 'Black Cats' name. 

Red Devils (Manchester United)

There are a variety of stories about how the red devil nickname originated. The most popular of these stories relates to the Salford Rugby Club.  During a trip to France and following their impressive performances, French journalists gave the rugby team the name ‘Les Diables Rouges’ which translates to ‘The Red Devils’. Following the Munich air disaster in 1958, the team was rebuilding following the death of some of its best players. Manager Sir Matt Busby liked the name and felt it would make Manchester United a more intimidating opponent to play. The rest as they say is history.

Braintree Town

Braintree Town are a football team that plays in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. The team and town get their names from the River Brain, which flows through the city.
