With Spring upon us, it’s time to get outdoors and play some sports to get fit and have a good time. The rules of badminton are fairly straight forward and are easy to pick up for beginners. The aim is to hit the shuttle over the net to land on your opponents half of the court, if you manage to do this you will win the rally. The person who wins the most rally’s will be the winner of the game. If your opponent hits the shuttle into or under the net the rally will go to you. Once the shuttle hits the ground the appropriate player will win that rally, unlike other racket sports such as tennis and squash where the ball can bounce and the game is still in play. You can only hit the shuttle once when it is served towards your half unlike sports such as volleyball where you can hit the ball multiple times. Competitive badminton is always played indoors, this is to keep the game as fair as possible as the slightest gust of wind could send the shuttle of course and effect the game throughout. Many people play badminton for pleasure and this is often played outdoors in the garden or on the beach.
Badminton is a fast paced game that keeps you on your toes. With a typical game lasting from 30 minutes to over an hour, there is plenty of time to work up a sweat. To ensure you don’t lose a rally you need to react quickly when the shuttle is hit towards your half of the court, this can result in a lot of fast running back, forth and side to side!

Regular exercise helps keeps the heart healthy, reduces stress and blood pressure and overall improves your productivity and energy levels. The key muscles that playing badminton targets are your biceps, triceps and forearm, quadriceps, biceps femonis, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. Playing regularly will work on these particular muscles, strengthening them and improving your overall fitness.
