There are plenty of sporting results that fans put down to black magic or divine intervention, but we all know it’s usually down to their team being good/bad on the day…or due to the ref! However, down the years, there have been reports of spiritual sightings at some sporting grounds…
The Stadium of Light, Sunderland AFC
In 2005, two members of staff at The Stadium of Light spotted a dim shape in a corridor and believed it to be a supernatural being. Shortly after this sighting, Sunderland’s then-striker Stephen Elliot also noticed the figure which caused some of his teammates to believe The Mackems’ ground was haunted! The spirit is thought to be called Spottee, an 18th Century fiend who would guide ships towards the coastal rocks, causing them to crash. This happened at Whitburn and Spottee was said to steal the stranded ships’ cargo.
St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton FC
Spirits were believed to be present around Southampton’s football ground in an act of revenge! It is said that tombs were unearthed around St Mary’s Stadium many years ago and this still disrupts the dead to this day, hence the haunting! A witch was once summoned to try and get rid of the spirits, such was the belief that St Mary’s was haunted. Southampton used to be a church football team, so maybe the spirits were trying to answer the prayers of Saints fans!
Highbury, Former Arsenal FC ground
Arsenal’s most successful pre-war manager, Herbert Chapman, is believed to wander around The Gooner’s old ground, Highbury, which was redeveloped into housing in 2006, after Arsenal moved stadiums. Chapman is understood to have been sighted at Highbury’s grounds along with a horse’s shadow. The horse is believed to have died during the development of Highbury’s North Bank stand. Many fans over the years have had their ashes scattered at Highbury, which gives some speculation to other sightings of spirits around the former stadium. In 2010 a group of fans went to the old ground with a Ouija board to ask the spirits some questions, such was their belief in the haunted goings-on at Highbury!
AJ Bell Stadium – Salford Rugby Club
The CCTV cameras at Salford Rugby Club have been reported to have caught images of strange figures roaming the ground. Staff at the AJ Bell Stadium have also heard sounds that have not been identified. Maybe the figure was appreciating the standing facilities at the AJ Bell Stadium, seeing as most arenas are seating-only nowadays! It is not known who the spirit could have been supporting, seeing as the stadium is home to Salford
